This book trailer is a glimpse into Elisabeth Tova Bailey's book The Sound of a Wild Snail Eating / A Natural History/Memoir. You'll hear a snail eat and see real film footage of a snail gliding over moss and peek into the book's story. When a virulent flu changes Bailey's life, she is confined to bed. Then a forest snail takes up residence on her nightstand. Intrigued, Bailey observes its midnight wanderings and strange anatomy, and learns of its complex courtship. This is the unusual story of her gastropod companion.

Also see the separate YouTube film "A Slide/Talk Narrated by Elisabeth Tova Bailey in which the author tells the story behind the book along with 20 slides from her life.

A special thanks to Tim A. Pearce, Asst. Curator & Head, Section of Mollusks, Carnegie Museum of Natural History and Ken Hotopp at Appalachian Conservation Biology. The sound recording of a snail eating © Lang Elliott and Marla Coppolino

Teeth! 2,642 thousand of them.....but it's a woodland snail species, a Neohelix albolabris. It does not bother anyone's garden. ~ETB

[...] courting rituals, they have kept their recognizable body shape pretty much the same. It must be an excellent body, be it a snail or a slug, able to withstand changing climates and environments.

I loved the book very much. And recommend it to all.

Coincidentally, snails and their shell-less cousins slugs have kept me company during times of illness when I was a kid and also recently. They are fascinating little creatures, with their complex socializing rituals and quirky habits. I wish people would see them as they are, far far more than garden pests. Gastropods had been here before the dinosaurs, for 500 million years, and despite having evolved into hundreds of thousands of species (50 000+ currently alive) with as many individual [...]

STUNNING, almost spooky information. Their teeth must be like sandpaper! I'm trying to commit it to memory to SHOCK people like me, who thought snails mouths had 0 teeth.

2,642 thousand teeth on the woodland snail species, Neohelix albolabris

    THANK YOU!

My sister has a chronic illness that she has been coping with for more than 14 years now. At the age of 39, she is a fighter and my hero. She finds inspiration in so much. We both plan to read this book, which came recommended by a dear friend. Thank you, Elisabeth. This is a gift to the world.
