It is interesting to watch the progression of E/B during the first season or two of the show. In the first few episodes Ernie is clearly the foil to Bert's straight-man. Gradually, Ernie takes on more of the persona of a young child seeking security from Bert's loving sage advice. Bert, meanwhile, shows the frustration that all parent figures feel when their youngsters' behavior is, shall we say, suboptimal.
