巴士阿叔 - New Bus Uncle

It was a rainy Sunday evening in Hong Kong. The streets were packed with people eager to get home after a long, wet day. The commute home unfortunately was made even more arduous in the Hung Hom district, as the police had cordoned off the streets from pedestrians in anticipation of Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping's motorcade passing through. At length, my roommate and I, along with dozens of other anxious, umbrella-wielding residents, were granted passage across the street. We made our way to the bus terminus where we were to catch the 212 bus back to Tai Kok Tsui.

The female driver hopped into the route 212 KMB bus. But then it began pulling away without boarding any passengers, to the shock and dismay of the dozen people who had lined up in its wake. What with the stress and fatigue of the rat race, and now the sudden fleeing of our transportation, it was perhaps natural that this nightmare would push someone over the edge. Indeed, it happened. I just didn't anticipate how the fog of anger and confusion would spread, and envelope not only the original instigator, but those KMB employees and passengers who tried to mediate the situation!

The man stood in front of the bus and immediately I recalled the iconic image of the Tiananmen Square massacre in which a lone democratic fighter stood in the path of rumbling tanks. Of course, what transpired in the Hung Hom bus terminus between an irate passenger, an immobilized bus and a couple of bewildered KMB employees is an inconsequential trifle compared to that traumatic event; yet the visual images were similar.

Why would you want a cop to "haul this guy away"? Grow some balls, this dude sure did. If anything, you should have supported him. Did the bus staff give any reason why the bus was driving off without passengers? Did it need refueling, etc? If so, the man surely would not have been standing there. They just did not give any good reason! If the bus was not allowed on the streets due to the presidential motorcade, why were all those other buses leaving? He needed support, not cops!
