This is the Great American Scream Machine at Six Flags Great Adventure. This coaster was designed and built by Arrow Dynamics and opened in 1989 and closed in 2010. Green Lantern now sits where GASM used to be and Green Lantern was formerly called Chang and it came from the former Six Flags Kentucky Kingdom park in Louisville, KY. GASM had a length of 3,800ft/1158.24m, a height of 173ft/52.73m with a first drop of 155ft/47.24m and a top speed of 68mph/109.435kph. GASM has 7 inversions with a total ride time of 2 min 20 sec. I've heard some people call it the Great American PAIN Machine and I agree as this ride hasn't aged well AT ALL! This roller coaster was the world's first roller coaster with seven inversions and it was the tallest and fastest roller coaster in the world when it opened. Unfortunately, that glory was short lived as Viper at SFMM took it's crown for being the highest and fastest coaster in the world when it opened one month later. Now the GASM is all but a memory as it gave it's final ride just after closing time on July 18, 2010.

Unfortunately, this coaster marked the beginning of the end for Arrow Dynamics. The Company filed for chapter 11 Bankruptcy in December of 2001. The last coaster they ever built was X The EXtreme at Six Flags Magic Mountain in Valencia, CA. It opened in Jan 2002.

  • @scipiomask Yah, only Arrow Dynamics lift hills sound like that and they seem to be a dying breed now. I can't even go to BGT anymore to hear that sound as they removed the Python back in 2007. Atleast we still have one of the few remaining Schwarzkopf coasters.

  • @123ArcticIce321 your guess is as good as mine but I'm pretty shure that it's age, maintenance, and/or it's lack of popularity have something to do with it

  • isnt arrow -> part of S&S worldwide now?

  • @rct3fsx From what I've been told, Arrow Dynamics folded and S&S bought their assets.

  • This was the first roller coaster I've ever ridden...I still can't believe it's gone. I was just at SFGA today and seeing it being torn apart was heartbreaking.

  • @TheYoungTechnique I know just how you feel. Busch Gardens Africa in Tampa, FL removed the Python about three years ago. Historically speaking, it was the first roller coaster to invert riders in the southeastern US. But, for me, it was one of the first roller coasters I rode that went upside down. Seeing it being ripped apart was a bit sad as part of my childhood was going away.

  • I really miss the chain lift sound from this coaster :(

  • @woodencoasterfan It was such a bumpy, uncomfortable ride.

  • i rode this rollercoaster on rct3 yea!

  • why did they take this down?

  • And this was actually one of the first looping coaster I rode back in like '89. Right around the time they got rid of Lightning Loops.

  • @ 0:13, the faded color blue on that train just shows how long it's been there and how popular it was in it's day. R.I.P to Arrow Dynamics, and R.I.P to the GASM!

  • @woodencoasterfan oh, darn, I can't believe I won't be seeing any more of these.
