They are the best for the EVITA casting!!!

Um, Sondheim is amazing, God knows, but I'm pretty sure this video is of ALW's work, yes? Let's not try to lessen the accomplishments of this brilliant man, just because you can think of someone that may do it a bit better. It's amazing to me that anyone could compose anything this wonderful, let's celebrate that in itself, yeah?

@Applescruffghostbust Actually, my feeling is that Webber was much better when he had Tim Rice's lyrics.
Not sure if tom smith was referring to the lyrics or the music. Personally, I find Sondheim's music and lyrics more deeply satisfying than Webber's. Also, there are no Sondheim shows I hate, but I can't say the same about Webber. The Rice/Webber musicals are some of my favourites tho.
As for Pop vs. Theatrical - gourmet food is amazing, but sometimes you just want a cheeseburger.

@tomsmith127 well you're forgetting something: Webber only wrote the music to his musicals, someone else wrote the lyrics whereas Soundheim wrote the lyrics as well as the music. So i don't think thats a fair contrast considering Webber's songs aren't a hundred percent webber. It's not Webbers fault if you consider the words to Evita more "pop" than "theatrical musical" because he didn't write them so don't call it his. Besides in a way all musicals can be considered both "pop" and "theatrical"

you have the show ?

@dohaperson I think you're completely correct. I never really made that connection before but it makes total sense judging by the videos I've seen.
-
@MithraMusic This is how she usually sings it when accompanied only by a piano....she belts it more as a contrast, versus when there's a whole orchestra and she usually sings it softer like in the cast recording

@csi3willows She was 30

@Rodeo6521 What are you talking about? All singers say how incredibly difficult Sondheim's songs are to sing. LuPone has said she has never sung certain songs correctly...
-
@lcowles I think it's been totally changed.....High Flying Adored, for example, isn't sung anymore
Not really the right forum I know, but still:
I don't want to seem snobbish, but there's aheck of a difference between Andrew Lloyd Webber's writing and Sondheim's.
I personally think Webber's more of a 'pop' musical writer, whereas Sondheim is a theatrical musical writer, if that makes sense.

I totally agree.
ALW can sure write a hit, but Stephen Sondheim can write a masterpiece (if there is even a word for it.)
