Mererani in northern Tanzania is the only place on earth where the precious stone tanzanite is mined. Every day thousands of children risk their lives in poorly constructed mine shafts for barely a meal a day. Despite efforts to curb this deadly practice, the global thirst for tanzanite continues to drive these children underground.

Clearly the Government doesnt care about its people, its not the gem lovers out there that should be blamed. The Tanzania government should ban kids from working, control the mine 100%, hire local ADULT works, give them a proper mine with correct venilation, tools, protection, and sell the rocks and put the money back into the economy. But for now thats a dream, maybe one day.

There are some mines that do it right! The Tanzanite Africa Mine does NOT use children and looks after it's people (as per photo's on thetanzagemsafrica website) is in Block D' -- Just make sure you buy from the right people! - Mererani is a horrid little place...And the local small-mines are shocking little holes in the ground.....

It sucks to see this! You can get video in any country of the strong taking advantage of the weak. It is how humans get a head. Survival of the fittest. No brother helping brother. But taking advantage of who you can. I hate it!
