hi,yeh it just turns the A minor scale into A harmonic minor.the major 3rd of E is the major 7th of A harmonic.
or it Turns it into the E phrygian dominant mode of harmonic to be exact,
if you play A harmonic minor over an E 7 chord, and phrase to them chord tones, but add in the flat 9,thats the sound of vinnies early stuff, plus malmsteen, tony mcalpine etc
neoclassical shred from 87.
hope this helps, sorry dont mean to sound like a teacher or some shit.

Are a lot of guys still substituting E major for E minor these days? It's essential that I know. I don't want to be left out of 1987.

He's an amazing guitarist, and -- from all accounts -- a really decent guy. It's a bit weird to see him looking EXACTLY like Gino Vannelli circa "A Pauper in Paradise"

Haha same, 1987.

No, shredfactor7 is right, this was just before Mind's Eye was released. Just because he was playing the licks from Lifeforce doesn't mean the album was out...for example, Eric Johnson was playing Trail of Tears live 2 years before Tones came out.

Is that backing riff already from a song of his?
Because it's amazing.
