Andy Weissman, a partner at Union Square Ventures, discusses what he sees as the biggest trends in mobile for 2012. The first phase is "mobile is dead", and he believes we're entering a phase where applications will be completely novel and cutting edge.

In Q4 2010, smartphone shipments overtook those of PCs for the first time. Throughout 2011, we saw traffic from non-PC devices in the U.S. grow to seven percent of all digital traffic, fueled by the adoption of tablets. And last month, PayPal data revealed a four-fold (371 percent) increase in the number of customers shopping through mobile devices on Black Friday.

Accordingly, the conversation among marketers has shifted from anticipating the impact of mobile technology to reacting to the ways by which the mobile population is challenging traditional norms governing consumer behavior.

I'd like it if someone would talk about how Smart phones are now the only cell phones with a regular headphone jack. I didn't want a Smart phone, but the basic MP3-capable phones through T-Mobile are only offered with a USB headphone jack. WTF is that? So if you want better audio, you're stuck buying a more expensive phone. Conspiracy! haha
