  • @flegolas A wetting agent decreases the energy per unit surface of the solid-liquid interface. A surfactant decreases the energy per unit surface of the liquid-vapor interface. Many surfactants are also wetting agents on many surfaces, but this doesn't have to be the case.

    What's the difference? Doesn't a wetting agent mean something that reduces cohesion of water molecules (surface tension)

  • The effect you're demonstrating is not the decrease of surface tension from 0.07 N/m to 0.02 N/m. This does happen, but it's not the relevant bit. The soap also is a wetting agent. That is what causes the pin to sink.

  • ...go down the drain. But when you wash your car with soap and water, it causes surfactants to enter rivers which is very harmful to aquatic wildlife.
