I loved Richard Marx when i was a kid, i recently started listening to this CD again, 20 + years later, i amazed that i still love these songs. THis song is indeed very intriguing, i didnt expect to find many others quite recently listening to or querying about this song. It is indeed a mystery, but i believe he is innocent. THe heartfelt song says it all, no pun intended. Chains around my heart is another great RIchard Marx song, love it.

Does anyone know where to find the other two versions of the music video with the alternate endings? I heard a rumor about that...can't seem to confirm it.

Always thought it was the sheriff when i was younger. When i watch it now i think she committed suicide. When he first meets her she is at the river and i think he saves her and they become friends. I think she was ashamed of herself after he saw her. she looks back holding his scarf thinking he came back, when he doesn't she commits suicide. *no judgement* maybe his mother and mary were hookers thats why so many men were upset wen they died.

i love this song because when i was a kid everybody thought i was "nuts"- i wasn't, but i got on the bad side of one of my neighbors and she spread rumors and lies about me, i even got examined by the school psychologist, but he deemed me normal....said i bvuried a cat alive, when i was actually walking around, CRYING & carrying a kitten that died on it's own from a litter our cat had-she spread that i buried a cat alive, #2 that i tried to drown my sister in a pond...etc etc-none of it true

@MPAH1981 Yap!That's about it...:( however I wonder why in the hell the sheriff would want to murder Marry?!

@syla347 (cont) Of course, seeing as he was an outcast in the town, anybody really could have done it and set the whole thing up to frame Marx so he'd be chased out of the town forever.
The last theory is that she wasn't killed, that she simply ran away, leaving people accusing Marx of disposing of her body simultaneously. However, seeing as she's seen at the bottom of the river dead in the video, this theory is highly unlikely.
Personally, the evidence points to the sherriff to me!

@syla347 (cont) Some people may simply see that to mean that they were by the river the last time he saw her before she died.
The second suspect is Mary's lover. The theory here is that he was jealous of Mary's friendship with Marx and flew into a wild rage and killed her. This way, he would lose Mary, but at least it wouldn't be to Marx.
The sherriff if the third suspect due to how Mary is seen running from the police car and his smirking when Marx is arrested and accused of the crime.
Awsome, Todays music is shit compared to these oldies.

My take on it? No one liked him since he came to town. Everyone made up "the rumors and the lies". Finally, he finds someone different; Mary. The townsfolk hate this & perhaps the most corrupt and prejudiced of them all, the Sheriff, decides to take matters into his own hands. Mary cheats on Richard, this perhaps reminds him of when he found out his mother cheated on his dad. The sheriff sees this as the perfect opportunity to kill Mary & pin it on Richard, thus banishing him from town. Forever.
