392 Sáta Interview with a Hungarian Gypsy violinist. Riport

In the course of our travels we also conducted interviews with the solo violinists whose music we were recording. This is a brief excerpt from one of these.

The report was made in the village of Sáta in 2005, and features the soloist Lehel Bari.
Interviewer: Gergely Juhász

Excerpt:
GJ: Did you also have a cimbalom player?
L: My band never had a cimbalom, just a violin, viola and contra-bass.
GJ: What villages did you play in?
L: Mályinka, Tardona, Vadna, Sajókaza, Bánhorváti, Bánfala, Dédestapolcsány, Visnyó and the surrounding area. I also played in the in and around Ózd a few times. Then, when I got together with another band, then we'd go up to Domaháza, Sikátor, Lelesz, Borsodnádasd, Szentgyörgy.
GJ: And how many weddings did you play?
L: Well I was 11 years old when I started playing. There were a lot of us kids, we needed the money. We went to work, and we played music too. [So playing music isn't work?!]
GJ: Where did you work?
L: I worked at the coal mine in Kirald for 40 years.

JG: Cimbalom is volt?
L: Az én zenekaromban nem volt cimbalom sosem, csak hegedű brácsa kontra bőgő.
JG: Milyen falvakban játszottál?
L: Mályinka, Tardona, Vadna, Sajókaza, Bánhorváti, Bánfala (sic, nem Bánfalva!), Dédestapolcsány, Visnyó körzete. Erre „befelé" Ózd környékén is voltam néhányszor. Aztán amikor összekerültem a gyesz? Zenekarral akkor jártunk felfelé úgymondjuk „a szorosba" Domaháza, Sikátor, Lelesz, Borsodnádasd , Szentgyörgy
JG: Lehel és hány lagziban voltál?
L: Kérlekszépen 11 éves voltam mikor belefogtam a zenébe. Sokan voltunk gyerekek, rá voltunk szorulva mindenféle jövedelemre. Dolgozni is jártunk meg zenéltünk is.(a zenélés tehát nem munka ?!)
JG: Hol dolgoztál?
L: Én a királdi szénbányánál dolgoztam 40 évet.
