Pitcher Jamie Moyer, then playing for the Seattle Mariners, met Erin Metcalf in 1998, when she was a teenager battling cancer. When Metcalf died of cancer two years later, at age 17, Moyer and his wife, Karen, started a foundation that would honor Metcalf's wish to help children dealing with loss.
The Moyers founded Camp Erin, a tuition-free, three-day weekend camp for grieving teenagers, and intended it to take root in every Major League Baseball city. They began planting in 2002.
This year, Camp Erin reached the Pittsburgh area for the first time as teens gathered Thursday through Saturday this past week at YMCA Camp Kon-O-Kwee in Marion Township.
The highlight of the camp for me was the song that we wrote. This song is our common bond and will live forever!
