It was the Children of Green Knowe and Tolly was meant to be a boy. I was (and still am) below average height so they cast me because they figured I looked younger than I was. And they were right. Although I did grow two inches during the filming and started developing a bumfluff moustache.

When I was little I recalled this scene, and the one where you first see Tolly go into his bedroom and you see Toby or Alexanders hand on the stair rail. 20 years later and I found the books and was astounded to realise this was that show I remembered watching. My friend Fred remembers the bird finding the key in the floor. Another friend downloaded the series for me 2 years ago. I LOVE watching this often, especially near to Christmas. I'd buy the DVD if they would only also remaster it too!

@powergirl07 there's a sort-of-new movie called "from time to time" that is based on the books but doesn't quite stay true to the story but still good, u can find it on YouTube too. Also there's a website for the green Knowe house, do a google search for "hemingford grey" that's the house's real name.

@powergirl07 I know you posted your question a long time ago but in case u wana know- theres 6 green Knowe books: children of, river at, stranger at, chimneys of/treasure at (two titles but same book), enemy at, and stones of..

someone asked about the real house, Green Knowe, which is the Manor at Hemmingford Grey, look for its site in google where you can find out about visiting.

Green Knowe the demon tree evil branches can't catch me! Or something....This was very creepy indeed. I remember being rather terrified but thrilled at the same time. Thank's for posting it for us all to reminisce over!

If anyone wants this on dvd PM me
Unfortunately I haven't got any more clips, I taped this sequence (and this sequence only) on VHS when the series was repeated back in the 80's as I was entranced by the Radiophonic Workshops version of 'Tomorrow shall be my dancing day' - and the visuals.

It was about a boy who got evacuated during WWII to a old manor house haunted by three English Civil War era children. The boy also has a run in with a 'demon tree' and is only saved by the intervention of the St Christopher statue. Its a charming, unpredictable atmospheric tale, of the sort that just isn't made these days.
