Going to be hiking from Orlando up into north Florida later this month with a couple of friends. Despite all the pan flute, this video made me very excited.
Thanks--I have checked the FAQ, that's why I'm looking for more information. We are looking forward to a thru-hike and taking on the AT right afterward.
Bluff Hammock is just south of Avon Park Air Force Range. It's on South Florida WMD land and therefore is open to the general public. Only private land requires FTA membership.
The Florida Trail is about 1400 miles, but since thru-hikers have some latitude in selecting which side of Lake Okeechobe, which route around central Florida and whether to go to Ft Pickens or Alabama, a thru hike will be about 1100 miles.
We have a lot of feral hogs in Florida which can do a lot of damage to the Trail, but very few actual boar that would endanger a human.
If you're planning a thru-hike, go to the website and read the Thru-Hiker FAQs. They'll answer a lot of questions.
I've heard that it's an 1100 mile trail and that it's a 1400 mile trail, but in planning it seems that the six week estimate for the whole trail is low compared to a thru-hike of the AT. I'm an old Florida native and I'm planning a thru-hike starting right after Christmas so I can reach Springer Mountain by early March. I read up on the hazards, but what about the wild boar that roam Florida. They are a big problem hiking in Missouri now.
Ocala's m'favorite part of the trail. . good times were had. Lot's of 'em.
Though, about 2 years ago me, dad, and his friend mike hiked the trail section in "osceola national forest" [from Olustee battlefield park to some type of resort/RV park just west of white springs]. It was actually very nice [since we were still members, we even got to stay at madison shelter]. i'm thinking of going back out there this christmas.
BTW, where is Bluff hammock? do you need to be a FT member to acess it?
