Chip budding is a very useful method of propagating apple and other fruit trees. It is done in late summer, using a mature bud from a leaf axil of the current year's growth. You need a small, very sharp knife and a steady hand-PRACTICE until you can do it with ease before you try to do it for real. Its easy, I learned to do it from a drawing and got it right with a take rate of 70% first time

This is a handy technique for budding a pollinator variety into a self-sterile tree
