it's just a 1x2 stick of wood from lowe's with three holes drilled for standard guitar tuners and brad nails used as string guides toward the nut.

the tail is cut at a 45 degree angle and three holes drilled down through serve as a simple tailpiece. a piece of pencil serves as a nut and bridge. the neck is held to the box with more pieces of 1x2 wood inside the box, with a screw passed from the inside, up through the box face, and into the rear of the neck, which sandwiches the cardboard between two pieces of wood. it also lets me take the neck of and transplant it to any other box i like!

i'm very proud of this adaption, as i'd grown tired of waiting for glue to dry, and i can change the neck to another box without destroying anything!!

the tuning is AEa. the A is a normal A string, the E is a D string tuned up two steps, and the HIGH A is a B string tuned down.

on a side note - make a VERY long neck for your slide guitars, it makes playing accuracy WAY easier! i've found it easier to be accurate on my stick and box than on my real guitar!!!

****** big respect to cigar box hero, shane speal! without him, the cigar box revolution would be nothing!!

keep building and keep playing!!!

  • @just4meeeeeee

    thanks for the comment!

the build is based around only the most basic tools, and no adhesives. making an an angled headstock would definitely change the need for the string guides, and it would also increase the number and cost of tools and materials. i've always hated the appearance of string trees myself, but this is the absolute most BASIC build possible. my challenge is to do the same with fewer steps each time LOL

  • i made a bass like this

  • alright! make a video of that thing, i'd love to see what you've built!

    thanks for posting! :D

  • @bluezXL

let's see that cardboard guitar!! and make sure to give a full description of your building method in the video. it's much more fun to see and hear each other's progress that way!

    :D

  • As a soldier of the Cigar Box Revolution, may Is ay I'm PROUD of you! You've epitomized what homemade music is all about! Nice job!

  • IF you had angled the cut of the headstock, could you have angled it so that you didn't need to use the brads as a string guide? I've never liked the look of string trees on strats, and seems to me IF you could line it up right, it would look even MORE basic than it already does. GREAT idea though.

  • when you were talking about the little yellow box at walmart to guide the angles. its called a miter box and a cross cut saw

  • great work !!

  • Awesome.

I'm trying to make an acoustic guitar.

I think I spent more time than I shoulda', but I'm trying to make it look at real as I can but not too real at the same time, I'm using Cardboard to make it and I think it'll look pretty cool once I'm done

Thanks for showing how you made yours, I just saved time and money by using a pencil as a nut and bridge instead of getting something that's 10X the price

  • Very clever dude.

  • I finished an electric guitar made 100% for chug and shredding. Now I've been wanting to make a budget acoustic, but instead of wood, I'm deciding to go with cardboard and make it sound nice so I can make people jaws drop :D

  • "string through" is a great idea, I think I will use it myself; I just painted a card board box guitar myself; it sounds great with the spare telecaster pickups I had.

  • that is so cool
