"Mr. Invincible #13 - In Love" marked sort of a peak for this series of traffic safety spots produced for Newstalk 780 KOH in the late 90s; we took a break from producing them for awhile after this one, which premiered in February of 1998 (right around Valentine's Day -appropriately enough- for a spot titled "In Love").

What's interesting about it is that we were sort of being our usual ludicrous selves while trying to make a serious point about traffic safety; in 1998, laptop computers were scarce (for one thing, they were ENORMOUSLY expensive) and people certainly weren't doing something called "texting" on their cellphones yet (another little technological toy that was just starting to catch on....remember, it's not that long ago when most mobile phones were something you saw only in the back seat of a limo, mainly because most cellphones were not small enough to carry in your pocket.) As it turns out, our goofy situation that portrays Mr. Invincible sending his girlfriend an email while driving was way ahead of its time.

I always liked this spot and the way that things slowly dawn on you as it unfolds. (That's a snippet of the theme from "A Summer Place" at the beginning; I understand from reliable sources that this flowery piece of music was THE "make-out" tune of 1959.) We also used to get a kick out of my announcer's disgust at Mr. Invincible's lovesick swooning (whenever the spot played on KOH, we'd laugh and say "That's 50,000 watts of yuck! blech!) And as those who live in Nevada can attest, the very notion of there even being a "Fernley Find-A-Date" website is just plain wrong, I can't put too fine a point on it.

As I mentioned before, this would be the last spot we would produce for awhile; the other spots remained in rotation, but it would be least six months before we would produce anything new. The reason for this is simple: at the time, Phil & I were distracted by our individual private lives, getting involved with various and sundry girlfriends. Those girlfriends are long gone. Mr. Invincible remains. 'Nuff said.
