Members of New Mexico labor unions rallied at the State Capitol Tuesday afternoon in a show of support for state employees in Wisconsin, where the governor wants to eliminate their collective bargaining rights.
Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker's budget bill also proposes cuts in state employee benefits.
Union members here say it could happen in New Mexico and many other states.
"We're very worried," said union member Richard Toledo. "If this happens in Wisconsin, it's just a matter of time before it starts to snowball across the country."
The Santa Fe rally was smaller than protests at the statehouses in Ohio and Michigan, where bills similar to the Wisconsin legislation are on the agenda. There are no such bills in the New Mexico legislature this session, apart from the biannual dead-on-arrival right to work bill. Rally-goers here think the union-busting action is partisan politics.
"I think it's a coordinated effort on the part of Republican governors to bust unions to erode the base of the Democratic party," said union member Robert Behrendt. "It's obvious."

  • @freein2339 wrong, the econ fascism in US is support by Both Dem like u and GOPers, America has never been given a choice between controls and freedom that's why people like u use force & your actions speak so well to show what you are: fascist in the worse form, unions are completely for preplanned econ like all socialists they fit "right" in, that is why they fear competition, because they are weak & use only force. Only free society (free econ.)can support union, learn that before 2 late.

  • @LibertyJedi That souds weak since Hitler like the racist GOP knew that breaking up the unions is the best way to control the masses with facism...Look it up Adolf.....

  • @freein2339 Hitler is what the unions are now doing by action, using a gun to get what they want because they fear the boogie man of freely competing and being voluntary, Action speaks louder than words. Hitler was worse of man as are the Unions now are becoming as well. Want to stop the future Hitler? Take on the modern union who use the gun of government to take what they want by force of arms. Right, too tough for you to figure it out? go back to your gang the Union & enjoy group think!

  • @LibertyJedi Typical stupid right wing nazi reply...you can't dispute the facts about Hitler so you choose to continue your same line of bullshit.....

  • @freein2339 not a righty so back to history books & learn who is stealing with the force of a gun, that's RIGHT u are with your non elected unions that do their shake down & cover it all with propaganda. I don't expect an ape like u to understand, as your actions speak that you have ape thinking and wish to use a club to take unjustly from the people who VOLUNTARY interact with other people, but u prefer to steal and hide behind gov with the use of the gun, because u not man enough to compete

  • @LibertyJedi Bullshit Adolf....Hitler had to break up the unions in order to control the his stupid followers....right wing idiots like you....

  • @freein2339 No:Unions are becoming the new brown shirts that use the power of the gun to get what they want. They are not elected by people, they make policy, they are an attack on the state sovereignty, these are: facts. All Nazis use the power of the gun of gov to get what they want. Their actions speak for itself. They take by force for their goodie 2 shoe agenda that hangs out everyone to dry. Compete like the rest of us (voluntary) & stop being the Nazis by definition of your actions.

  • Stupid unions all there doing is letting all the jobs go over seas.

  • "Let them march all they want, as long as they pay their taxes. ”

Alexander Haig U.S. Secretary of State, 1981-1982

  • @AnotherWayFilms Ugh. See above. Don't let facts get in the way of your cry baby crusade.
