Have you looked down at a loved one dying in a hospital bed. One day you will I expect and this song is my story of one such time.

Sinkers Hooks and Things

I remember when my father passed away,
the very last thing he had to say,
with the twinkle in his eye,
just about to die,
I feel the pain is slipping away.
Son I think I'll beat the basted today.

Death is a part of a story
Chapters end where new ones start.
The things my father done for me,
they were written in my heart.

They locked his house and took away the key,
cut down half the roses and a tree.
They took away those tins
of sinkers, hooks and things.
But they couldn't take his favorite recipe,
or the bag of tricks he left inside of me.

They took away his hat and his coat,
rocking chair, tackle box and boat.
They couldn't take the pride,
he gave me when he died.
They left me with his sense of right and wrong,
the things he left behind that make me strong. Ref end

  • Upon hearing and reading the lyrics of this song, I got teary eyed because I remembered my father who passed away when I was only 15 yrs. old, leaving behind his 10 children. We may not be rich but his words of wisdom and his very positive attitude in life is a legacy and the treasures he left for us. Thank you Doug for writing and singing this song, it is a fitting tribute to our father.
