The Saint John's Bible exhibition at the Walters Art Museum, February 15, 2009 - May 24, 2009
The Saint John's Bible is a contemporary manuscript edition of the Bible commissioned by Saint John's University in Minnesota. Written in English and fully illuminated, this large-format book is being created under the direction of master scribe and artist Donald Jackson. Even though it is yet to be finished, the Saint John's Bible has already been recognized as a major monument of contemporary calligraphy and book arts, particularly for its use of new and innovative imagery within an ancient manuscript tradition. The exhibition features 22 bifolio openings from the Books of Wisdom and of the Prophets, set alongside some 50 manuscripts and objects from the Walters permanent collection. An education gallery provides a look at scriptorium practice then and now.
