wasn't it joe strummer who said[confided?] that the white man should be grateful above all to the black man because wo the likes of leadbelly and many other old black dudes from start of the 20th century, we wouldn't have had a great rock scene. we'd still be listening to jazz and beethoven

Don't forget Mano Negra/Manu Chao;). Have you checked out Emir Kusturica & no smoking orchestra. Kusturica is a Serbian film director. He has twice won the Palme d'Or at Cannes (for When Father Was Away on Business and Underground), as well as being named Commander of the French Ordre des Arts et des Lettres. His well-known movies among these two are Do You Remember Dolly Bell?, Time of the Gypsies, Arizona Dream, Maradona (documentary), Super 8 Sories (recommended!)...

    Greetings from Serbia!

As great as this song unquestionably is, there's something a bit cringe-inducing about Strummer telling Dillinger, Leroy Smart, Delroy Wilson and Ken Boothe that their reggae isn't real enough for him, and too commercialised, in a song where he melds that same genre with the most popular white music trend of the time to make this catchy hit. I mean come the fuck on.

Trying to make a living? Yes and no. Don't forget they put the triple album Sandinista out for the price of a single album and said they'd take no royalties until it broke even. And one of their crew punched Sandy Pearlman in the face, don't forget (second album producer for those who don't know). That's not quite selling out or being pop, is it? Yeah, I was there and know a bit too. London.

Oh you're a lively one aren't you? Go on with your connections, I'm sure by the end of it all you'll find a way (if you're honest) to put yourself down as a popper that was just out for money. I got 10 bucks on it, son, now get goin'!
