http://www.bestguitars.org/gibson/explorers The Gibson Explorer is one guitar that is highly recognizable thanks to its truly unique body shape. Considered to be the guitar of the future, this model made its debut to the public in 1958. It remained in production briefly from 1958 to 1959 and was discontinued. However, it was reissued in 1976 and remains in popular today.

The Gibson Explorer became a common sight in heavy metal and hard rock bands during the 1970s and 1980s, which contributed to its popularity, despite its rough start just a few decades before. This model comes with a solid body type, which was originally made of korina from 1958 to 1963. Later models were made of maple, mahogany and alder. Its neck joint is set and comes with a 24.75 inch scale length. The neck of the Gibson Explorer was also originally made only from korina but now includes maple and mahogany. Rosewood and ebony are the wood types often used to make the fretboard. This type of guitar features two humbucker pickups and comes in the following custom colors: natural, ebony, classic white and cherry.

Because the original Gibson Explorer guitars were made of korina for such a short period of time, any existing models are considered to be very valuable. Many believe that less than 50 exist, raising the value up to as much as hundreds of thousands of dollars. Even though the Gibson Explorer did not sell very well during its first year, the Gibson Guitar Corporation brought it back after seeing the competition do well with similar body styles in the late 1970s.

  • I love the "It was made from 1958-1959 then discontinued until 1976" Then right after that it says "The guitar was made of Korina wood from 1958-1963". Quite impossible since the Explorere wasn't made during those last 4 years mentioned. lol Truly a goofy video.
