This is a song by John from the "Earth Songs" CD from 1990. I found some paintings from a website that depict very unusual and beautiful images of space. While the song isn't about space, there are references to the cosmos which to me are a means of thinking metaphorically that all living things are children and brothers on this earth. There is no distinction of genus as a whole.

There are 2 versions of this song. One from the Seasons of the Heart album, and this one. This one is better in my estimation as it has more "oomph" and just sounds fuller. The words were actually written by Joe Henry who used to partner with John on some of his albums. The song "The Wings That Fly Us Home" has the words that were written by Joe, the words to "Spirit" from Windsong, etc., and he also wrote the liner notes to the "I Want To Live" album. His vision is unparalleled.

This song features the most sophisticated songwriting that I've ever witnessed. John's musicality has never been finer. It's an interesting study in contrast in watching these videos that feature incredibly soaring material from his early days of youth, eagerness and giddiness at getting his music out to the world, and then see the years go by where he matures while sharing among the most incredible display of words and music the world has ever seen.

It's hard to say which songs represent his finest work, and maybe there's no answer. The words and music to "Eagles and Horses" are stellar and beautifully expressed, and so is this particular song. Oh and yes, Joe Henry wrote the words to "Eagles and Horses."

He gave us a treasure trove of words and music, and each listen brings along a different outlook, feeling of emotion or way to look at the meaning. Judging by the comments I read on some of these slideshows or videos, other people experience that as well.

There will never be another songwriter, singer, performer like John Denver. Hope you enjoy this one.

  • Thank you for this precious gift...!

  • RIP John Denver. I remember the day he died. I was in Israel on a Kibbutz getting drunk and partying and somebody said he had died in a plane.

This song deserves to be more well known.

  • your deductions are so good and am glad many people still share your ideas

i've always loved john denver's songs, his messages are stirring, may it continue to stir us all in the right direction.

  • John played this song solo at the Aspen Music Tent in 1995 at the last Windstar Symposium. He described how he wrote the song in Hong Kong, alone at a restaurant, on a napkin, one of those songs that just came from the sky. He played some "new" songs that never got recorded such as Wandering Soul, and Healing Time.

  • Awesome pictures.

  • Perker- since I got this same message in my personal email I assume you are replying to my comment.

I did not say that he has the most beautiful voice in the whole world- just that he has a very beautiful voice. When I said 'the most beautiful voice', I didn't mean it literally- it's a matter of context.

Besides all that, everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

  • No he hasen't world most beautiful voice.

I think some other does. There is 5000 other singers, who you haven't heard yet, so you can't be sure that he has the world most "Beautiful" voice.

  • jrssjdca - I agree completely with what you wrote that "He gave us a treasure trove of words and music, and each listen brings along a different outlook, feeling of emotion or way to look at the meaning. " I find new meaning and joy in his music every time I listen to it. No matter how many times I listen to a John Denver song I feel like its the first time, and I am always find new inspiration.
