This is a short video to show that the Vortex Flash Hider has a tone to it when being shot or hit. I made this video because it came up in a forums I go to about this tone the hider makes ( http://68forums.com/forums/forum.php ). I have never heard the sound until I tried it by hitting the hider with my finger and sure as can be the hider does make a sound. In any case, I posted the video maybe to help others that could be wondering where they are hearing this sound from. I would bet a lot of people just thought it was a simple ringing of the ears after a shot was fired or in the case of the AR, they could have been thinking it was the buffer spring. Now mind you, the sound you are hearing in the video isn't that loud because of me hitting the hider with my finger, but when shooting there is a lot of barrel harmonics going on and that in turn, I would think, would make this sound much louder.

  • Also do you need a crush washer to install? I read some reviews saying that you don't.....

  • @Mizzsekcnsweet No washer needed. It is recommended by the company not to use one, I did just to get the wrench flats even. The way it should be installed, is tightened easily (no reason to but the barrel/upper in a vice), then from the act pf shooting some how it tightens more on its own (again per the company that makes it)

  • how bad is the ring? I plan to buy one but if its really loud when shooting I could be annoyed by it........

  • @Mizzsekcnsweet I have never heard it myself well shooting. I just seen reports of the ring so I tried it for myself in this video.

  • @jaysonvilett Got ya and understood. I had the washer installed just to time it better, for looks I guess. It was installed with care, not to over tighten. Not that it matters now for that upper, I seen the light in shooting 6.8 (cost to much for what it is to shoot) and went back to 5.56.

  • Cool flash hider, how long does it ring after firing?

  • @GUNeRAG Not sure, myself I don't think I have heard it when firing, I bet I just didn't notice it. It was brought to my attention in the forums I posted about in the description. I will be sure to listen for it the next time I am out with the AR 6.8 I have it on. Thank you for watching and commenting!

  • I've got an old Lafrance/Smith straight flute vortex and that sucker will ring for a good 20-30 seconds on a 14.5" Colt barrel (yes its silver soldered with 1200deg paste). So between that and the sproing from the recoil spring there are all sorts of bizarre noises. Rings pretty loud after firing too but the muzzle blast drowns out a lot of it.

  • no crush washer

  • i actually think thats kind of cool...

i would flick it when i unpack my rifle at the range. getting it

  • I have had one for a year and no issue. Mine came installed on my noveske and it DOES NOT need a crush washer. The manufacture says so. Best flash hider impo

  • i wonder if putting some kind of paint on the flash hider would help stop the ring. im sure you can mute the ring by doing something by the sort of coating the flash suppressor.
