I agree ; their is no more interesting application of science than understanding survival & the many dangers to life. Believe it or not , it is even more profitable to apply your science to survival than destruction, believe it or not , if you will imagine. Now if humanity would just embrace its rampant greed & do the intelligent thing with it, focus on more of everything such as life and chances at species survival. The question is are we greedy enough, more so than the dinosaurs ?

Not really. To make any substantial change in the trajectory of the asteroid, you'd have to change its orbit by thousands of kilometers, because Earth's gravitational pull would attract it again very quickly.
Humans have no current weapon technology to reach an asteroid and put it off its orbit at such long distances, and nuclear weapons are no use for that purpose. If a large asteroid were to hit, there's nothing we could do but take the impact.

the good thing about advance warning with asteroids, you really only need to change the trajectory a fraction of an inch, and by the time it passes earth, it could be thousands of miles off to one side
thanks for putting such informative vid on youtube
