Schubert: Rastlose Liebe, D 138, Op. 5, #1
Poem by: Goethe

Schubert's setting of Rastlose Liebe by Goethe is chronologically the next masterpiece to follow "Gretchen am Spinnrade". As in the latter, Schubert meets the intensity of emotion in Goethe's verses by composing a leitmotif which conveys the external and internal scenes. The six bar piano prelude seizes the impetuous mood of Goethe's poem. The semiquaver arpeggios and ascending dynamics suggest the swirling snow scene and the poet's perturbation. Bass line for piano stresses the restlessness of the poet.

Rastlose Liebe

Dem Schnee, dem Regen,
Dem Wind entgegen,
Im Dampf der Klüfte,
Durch Nebeldüfte,
Immer zu! Immer zu!
Ohne Rast und Ruh!

Lieber durch Leiden
Möcht ich mich schlagen,
Als so viel Freuden
Des Lebens ertragen.
Alle das Neigen
Von Herzen zu Herzen,
Ach, wie so eigen
Schaffet das Schmerzen!

Wie soll ich fliehen?
Wälderwärts ziehen?
Alles vergebens!
Krone des Lebens,
Glück ohne Ruh,
Liebe, bist du!

Restless Love

Through rain, through snow,
Through tempest go!
Amongst steaming gorges,
O'er misty waves,
On, on! still on!
Peace, rest have flown!

Sooner through sadness
I'd wish to be slain,
Than all the gladness
Of life to sustain
All the fond yearning
That heart feels for heart,
Only seems burning
To make them both smart.

How shall I fly?
Forestwards hie?
Vain were all strife!
Bright crown of life.
Turbulent bliss,
Love, thou art this!
