Jewish teens and teens from the Englewood community came together during the 2008/09 year, and decided to create the 2nd annual Lead Awareness Festival. This lead awareness project is a teen-led initiative that crosses boundaries to raise awareness and provide solutions to the lead poisoning crisis in the community. After months of planning, the Festival took place in April 2009. The event brought together community residents, provided activities for kids, on-site lead screening, access to free healthcare plans, and information about the lead problem in a pamphlet prepared by the teens.
This activity is sponsored by Or Tzedek, the teen social justice initiative of the Jewish Council on Urban Affairs (JCUA). Through hands-on service, teen-led projects and education about Jewish values and social justice, teens learn about challenges facing diverse urban communities and respond in action.
