Lonnie Donegan - Puttin' on the style & Does your chewing gum lose his flavour 1973

1. Puttin' on the style (Released 1957)
Sweet sixteen goes to church
Just to see the boys
Laughs and screams and giggles
At every little noise
Turns her face a little
And turns her head a while
But everybody knows she's
Only putting on the style

She's putting on the agony
Putting on the style
That's what all the young folks
Are doing all the while
And as I look around me
I sometimes have to smile
Seeing all the young folks
Putting on the style

2. Does your chewing gum lose his flavour (Released 1959)
Does your chewing gum lose its flavour
On the bedpost overnight?
If your mother says dont chew it
Do you swallow it on sight?
Do you catch it on your tonsils
Do you heave it left and right?
Does your chewing gum lose its flavour
On the bedpost overnight?

Oh-me, oh-my, oh-you
Whatever shall I do
Hallelujah, the question is peculiar
I'd give a lot of dough
If only I could know
The answer to my question
Is it yes or is it no

Does your chewing gum lose its flavor
On the bedpost overnight
If your mother says don't chew it
Do you swallow it in spite
Can you catch it on your tonsils
Can you heave it left and right
Does your chewing gum lose its flavor
On the bedpost overnight

Here comes a blushing bride
The groom is by her side
Up to the altar
As steady as Gibraltar
Why, the groom has got the ring
And it's such a pretty thing
And as he slips it on her finger
The choir begins to sing

Does your chewing gum lose its flavor
On the bedpost overnight
If your mother says don't chew it
Do you swallow it in spite
Can you catch it on your tonsils
Can you heave it left and right
Does your chewing gum lose its flavor
On the bedpost overnight

Now the nation rise as one
To send their only son
Up to the White House
Yes, the nation's only White House
To voice their discontent
Unto the Pres-I-dent
They pawn the burning question
What has swept this continent

(Lonnie speaks)
If tin whistles are made of tin
What do they make fog horns out of
Boom, boom

Does your chewing gum lose its flavor
On the bedpost overnight
If your mother says don't chew it
Do you swallow it in spite
Can you catch it on your tonsils
Can you heave it left and right
Does your chewing gum lose its flavor
On the bedpost overnight

  • my grandad used to love his music, we played this at his funeral and everyone started laughing along with it

  • I have always thought that music--first of all--should be fun. Donegan is FUN.

  • Loved Lonnie. So much fun and so many styles. If you don't enjoy him you're dead.He did everything from gospel to folk to vaudeville and gave it a new twist.

  • I don;t know how many of the people in this audience knew how fortunate they were to be seeing and hearing Lonnie Donegan. He influenced so many of the great musicians we know today. What a treat . . and what fun he was.
