Visit to Santa Marta favela today, June 29, 2010, to the same spot where Michael Jackson stood filming video for "They Don't Care About Us," a song about government neglect and policy brutality: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vhga1PdfNyg. Last Saturday, June 26th, a statue of Michael was erected on the same site.
Today Santa Marta is one of the primary targets of creative and polemic state interventions, including community policing, a furnicular tram, buildings painted by Dutch artists, investments in daycare, a "culture point" and the much-criticized "wall" to keep the community from spreading into the surrounding forest, but which just recently saved residents from a boulder that would have hit various homes had it not been erected.
