Hello Guys

Well today I have for you to review a HP Proliant DL380 G3, I got this server for nothing really, I still have to pay for the shipping, but that is it at the moment.
The current specs of the server is:

Intel Xeon Dual Core 2.8Ghz
2GB of Ram
2 37GB HDD in Raid
Running Windows Server 2003

I want to upgrade it to:

Intel Xeon Quad Core 2.8Ghz
8GB of Ram
4 80GB HDD
Windows Server 2008

On the server i Currently host a Minecraft, Teamspeak, soon to be a website, and share programs from it

Well that is it for the moment

  • Shall I Get One? For Minecraft?

  • @cc44332211 You can do. Although you can use a normal desktop pc for Minecraft, they can host one just fine.

  • Just wondering is it important to have a static ip if you want to run a server ? E.g for minecraft or mumble

  • @kossy25 Not really. It can be better if you don't want to continue logging into the router everytime the server is restarted. but if you don't care about that, then not really.

  • You ruined that with Windows ;)

  • DL360 G5's are getting mucho cheap on ebay. I would start looking at G5's since they use SATA, and memory is starting to get cheap ($150-180 for 16gb -- 8x2gb ECC FB dimms). 3ghz quad cores (2x) can be had for another $175. But make sure you have a 2nd rev mobo, otherwise you're stuck at E51xx Xeons. I just upgraded a DL380G5 to above (2xQC 3ghz, 16gb) for $350 total, which will be an MS 2008 + SQL server.

  • I bought one to host minecraft a few months ago, it has slightly better specs than yours and im running ubuntu 10.4 on it. Too bad I don't really use it because of shit New Zealand internet (128kbs upload) Apart from that it works fine

  • Not sure if it's been mentioned but you said you were gonna upgrade to 12GB ram, now I've got this server myself and I ran into huge problems doing this. Firstly I had massive trouble finding a 64bit Xeon that WASNT 800MHz FSB, as the majority of these DL380 G3's have a 533MHz FSB. Therefor limiting you to 3.75GB or so. Secondly, if you happen to be unlucky enough to get one of the earlier DL380 G3's that only had a 400MHz FSB, the rated max ram is only 6GB, and it'll be very hard to find a Xeon

  • What Is Your Minecraft Ip?

  • @rockerboy12doglover I messaged you about a Drive.

  • @rockerboy12doglover Them Drives Are Over My Budget LOL :(

  • @cc44332211 The hard drive for one of these is a hot plug scsi
