They use to be a force to be reckoned with, times have changed. 200mm of armour and 100mm rifled gun are no match for modern mbt's.

Its just the way it is, 40-50 years ago, T-55's were not something to mess with.

1 V 1 T - 55 has no chance against leperd 2 or abrahams but 20 v 1 different story. Its like sherman v tiger or tiger 2. Quantity will beat quality. Russia is not known for worrying about man losses.

@mchuquillanqui No not true. Watch video "atif i zabac" and you will see how Bosnian Army 5 Corps dares to use T55 to clear building of terorists while beeing sheeled at multiple times. That was only one of many risks they took to defeat much better equiped ex Yugoslav enemy who was not ready to do the same.

@Cleverman50 Also a well place shot from an Rpg-6 can take out an M1 tank. Specially in the back where the armor is the weakest. Also an RPG-29 Vampir could knock it out.

@Cleverman50 No, there are a few. As I said if you have a well season crew in a T-90 or hell even a T-80 who have seem combat and in the M1, you have a crew that never seem combat. It's clear who will be the winner. Also, the first 6000 M1 tanks use the M256 120 mm smoothbore cannon developed by Rheinmetall AG of Germany for the Leopard 2. So they are a pretty good match for it. It's a good tank but not the best.

@Cleverman50 I would not say that M1 tank is the best tank in the world today. The German Leopard 2 and the British FV 4034 Challenger 2 are a more than a match for it. However a t-80 could take out a M1, if the crew knows what they are doing. Also I would think the T-90 is a fair match for the M1 but then again it is nothing more than a up graded T-72.

@BorisD1992 ya id say it could get a mobility kill on an Abrams and RPG-7 could get a mobility kill on any tank in existance, but as far as completely destroying the tank, eliminating the crew, etc. No i dont think a T-55 could do that.

@Cleverman50 1000 T55's were operated by people who even know what a tank is and the american tank had shit loads of air support. I bet that a T55 with a very good crew can take out an M1 Abrams any time.

I would also like to see the crew of the M1 cold start that turbine engine at -20 in the winter.
