How To Use The Pen Tool In Adobe Illustrator
First I will open the file I will be tracing. This peaceful alien should be easy. So right away I am going to lock down this image so that when I am tracing I won't click on it or move it around. To do that just click on the image, then goto image lock selection.
Or just hit cmd 2 Now that he is locked down I am going to select the pen tool on the left tool bar, or just hit "p". You can also click down on the pen tool and drag out a little menu with all the pen tools on it. So I'll start off by clicking to place a point, then click and hold to continue the path. You can see if you click and hold you get little handle bars, you can bend the line like this to make smooth curves.
As you can see I have a white fill, so I am going to take that out and give the line a black stroke so I can see better. Click back on your point to continue where you left off. When you click and drag it makes the line continue on that path, so if you recheck the point it resets the path. You can also use the feature to your advantage for certain curves.
Once you get to the end of your shape you can see at the beginning of the path there is a little circle, click this to complete the path. Now let me do the eyes real quick. Once you are done select your parts and color it appropriately. You can use the eyedropper tool to get any color in the palette. I'll select the alien and move him over so you can see the final artwork.
