Zac Matthews, Dr. Dave Kopplin, and Tonights Guest Artist Alex Budman bring the Horsepower (a little Cal Poly humor) with the Cal Poly Jazz Band Combo. Alex Budman is an active musician of 20 years with performing experience on all saxophones, clarinets, flutes, electric and acoustic basses. His versatility has allowed him to perform and record with a wide range of artists including Liza Minnelli, Rosemary Clooney, Erykah Badu, The Game, Boz Scaggs, Eric Clapton, Bettye LaVette, The Funk Brothers, Wendy and Lisa, Busta Rhymes, Jesús Díaz, Glide Memorial Church Band and the San Jose Symphony. http://www.alexbudman.com Mr. Budman can be seen on his Website http://www.alexbudman.com and on MySpace.com
Darrell Tung (baritone sax), James Goese (tenor sax), Alexi Kassovsky (alto sax), Singer/Songwriter Candice Brown, Brandon (Biznessman) Cordoba (piano), Capn Craig Tsurumoto (bass), Nathan Dennies (guitar), Jeffrey Bui and Ara Astourian (drums), finish their set with Milestones(1947 John Lewis)
Milestones is the title of two different compositions. The first is by pianist John Lewis who wrote it for trumpeter Miles Davis first recording as a leader in 1947. Lewis was so happy to be included in the session, which featured Davis mentor alto saxophonist Charlie Parker, that he presented the tune to Davis. In Visions of Jazz: The First Century Gary Giddins says, Milestones [was] a line with so many harmonic bottlenecks that Parker insisted hed play just the bridge because the tune was too hard for a country boy like him. From JazzStandards.com
He (ed. Miles Davis) played with (ed. Billy) Eckstine in 1946-1947 and was a member of Parker's group in 1947-1948, making his recording debut as a leader on a 1947 session that featured Parker, pianist John Lewis, bassist Nelson Boyd, and drummer Max Roach. I spent more to see Valentine's Day and had less fun (oh well, my bad). Get there early and see the Best University Jazz in SoCal (OR NOT)!

Wow... you could really hear the Busta Rhymes influence in Budman's playing!

Interesting Point! Wow, you have very analytical hearing!
When I view this again, I can hear a little Flipmode when he plays Off The Beat and Jumps Scales. Similarly, Capn Craig (bass) seems to also have incorporated this style.
Thanks for the comment. You have earned Points with me. I'll mention it to Alex and Capn Craig.

in all seriousness, some rappers have some really hip phrasing. i think there may be too many changes in this tune for some of the players. i think i'd prefer to listen to them play something free or modal.... something that would free their ability to express.

True but you must remember that, other than Alex, these are all Students and not Working Professionals. Coupled with the fact that they are all volunteers in this free form Jazz Band Combo, I think you'll agree, they do a credible job.

That drummer is terrible

Someone JUST mentioned that Brandon Cordoba keeps LOOKING to his LEFT instead of DIRECTLY STRAIGHT AT THE PIANO OR to his RIGHT (toward the audience). They INSIST that this is BAD SHOWMANSHIP! I agree. MOVE THE PIANO TO THE OTHER SIDE OF THE STAGE OR TELL HIM TO LOOK TO HIS RIGHT (and acknowledge his fans in the audience). Another said that he should wear a hat (like Basie or Ellington) and then TIP THE HAT TOWARD THE AUDIENCE WHEN THEY CLAP FOR HIS SOLOS! Good Point!
