Our trip to Argentina in October of 2009 was a blast. Thanks to my buddy Rob, we were able to score a couple of dirt-cheap round trip tickets to Buenos Aires and back with a stop each way in Mexico City. Part 1 of this movie will cover a little tour of downtown Buenos Aires and our first day in Iguazú. The flight from B.A. (Buenos Aires) to Iguazú was about two and half hours, but believe me, it was well worth the trip. Rob took some convincing to take the side trip to Iguazú thanks to my powers of persuasion, but I think as you will see in the video, he was later ecstatic to be there. I wish my brother and another great mutual friend of ours whom we mention in the video could have been there as well.
Arguably the most cosmopolitan city in all South America, Argentinas historic capital has breathtaking energy, spacious grandeur, and a self-confident style. Despite grand boulevards and hefty, ostentatious architecture, this is a city of villages, or more correctly barrios (districts) - 47 of them I believe. Famously described as the Paris of South America, it is exuberant, stylish, and full of great pretense and hot gossip.
In part 1, well see mainly the easternmost section of B.A. along the bank of the Río de la Plata (River Plate). Hotels, museums, government buildings, shopping, and entertainments are located here in the districts of Palermo, Recoleta, Retiro, San Nicolás, Monserrat, San Telmo, and La Boca.
We then travel to a gorgeous site which runs along the border of Brazil and Argentina. Amidst a spectacular jungle setting, the Cataratas del Iguazú (Iguazú Falls) lie on the Río Iguazú. On the Argentine side, where we had the pleasure of hiking, the falls can be experienced from a number of angles. By far the most magnificent walk is the one right across the upper river, from Puerto Canoas to the Garganta del Diablo (Throat of the Devil), where the water plunges the entire 240 ft (some 70 meters) off the basalt flow into the cauldron below. We were fortunate enough to arrive at the Devils Throat at a time of day (late afternoon) to watch the flocks of birds that swoop through the billowing mists on their way back to their nests for the night.
I hope you guys enjoy the video and perhaps feel a tingle of the rush and excitement that was surging through our veins. Please let me know what you think by clicking on the feedback form below and stay tuned for Part 2.
