I did the same thing by accident in high school electronics class about 10 years ago when I threw what I thought was a dead 9V battery into a bin of steel wool (which I thought was just a normal bin). Suffice to say the class loved the resulting fire but the teacher did not.

@mattcadders I've had the same problem, but I've had success in the past. The stuff that burns seems to have a blue tint.

@XTIRP8 the thinner the better and when it starts to burn blow really hard on it then put something like a tissue or something flammable

i found out this experiment the hard way and my dads tool shed lost its life fxxxing thing was a wast of space anyway and my summer house is there now mha ha ha haaaaa jaffa cakes

nice. i tryed that but the steel wool just doesnt want to get going, does it have to be certain steel wool?

Is the battery flat? Don't know about the wool, i assumed it was all the same.

If i do this with a 12 volt alarm battery, Will I blow My Head Off?

Another trick is if you go camping take some wire wool and when you want to make a nice camp fire you can..and it don't matter if the wire wool gets wet just shake off the water and away you go.But don't forget the 9 volt battery though....

yep, excellent way to start a fire in the rain, so long as you can find dry wood, lol
