hey have got too have the know how now to have rockets that will go into space without the old 3 stage rockets or the junk space shuttle program that has held up back for the last 30 years.

They need to build shuttles that can take off and land without the use of rockets

It is going to take private companies to get us up there.

I wish they will come up with ships least like in space 1999 that can do 1/4 the speed of light, least that will get us anywhere in the solar system

@altha2008 In fact we already have them, ionic drives, the problem is they have a very low acceleration rate and take forever to reach those speeds (and slow down again)

Another option - don't laugh - is to explode mini-nukes behind the ship then use the recoil to accelerate. Too risky to use in Earth's atmosphere, though.

But getting off the planet surface will still require chemical rockets for the foreseeable future, I'm afraid. Gravity is something we haven't got round yet.
