1. Charlie Rutlage

4. Ann Street
5. Two little flowers
6. The greatest man
with Albert Hirsh (piano).
Musicraft masters NMQ 17/8, rec. early 1938.
Although not too many people bought this disc when it was initially published, it still is a milestone in the history of Ives reception. All six are fine interpretations, and in my opinion "Charlie Rutlage" has never been done better.
Baritone Mordecai Baumann (1912-2007) studied with Francis Rogers at Juillard School and throughout his career was a musical and reliable performer of modern music. He was especially known for his collaboration with Hanns Eisler, whom he met in 1935 and toured with under the auspices of the Anti-Nazi Foundation, but he was also associated with the works of Henry Cowell, Marc Blitzstein, George Antheil, and Ives - in my humble opinion still an underrated composer. Together with his wife Irma he later founded the summer arts school Indian Hill.
An excellent performance, and a fine transfer of this rare recording.
Many thanks!
