The size of the shell. Smaller shells have less shot and less recoil and can be fired in smaller guns that weigh less. The smaller the number, the larger the shell. The most popular guages in the US are from largest to smallest:10,12,16, 20,28 and .410. The idea is to match appropriate the size guage with the target/game. For example, a 12 guage is a bit much for small game such as rabbit. It will work but a 20 guage would be better. I hope this helps.

i have this gun. only been shooting trap for 4 months with this and i already got a 23. very great gun. low kick and can be shot 3000 times without being cleaned. i love it
