Zenn and the Art of Electric Car Maintenance

Ian Clifford -- founder of Toronto-based, Zenn Motors -- has taken a lead role in the production of Canadian electric cars. The Zenn -- or Zero-Emission-No-Noise car -- is a 100% electric vehicle that travels at a regulated maximum speed of 40 km/hr -- and can travel about 60 kilometers on a single charge.

It has an energy consumption equivalent to 245 mpg -- and is 80% recharged in only 4 hours. Using a ZENN instead of a conventional car could eliminate over 6 tons of CO2 from the atmosphere each year.

The car uses a plug that fits into a regular wall socket and each charge adds only about 35 cents to the average electricity bill.

But, even though the car is for sale in over 40 US States, bureaucratic hurdles continue to prevent its approval for sale in Canada.

At $14,000 - the Zenn could be exactly what Enviro-conscious consumers have been looking for.

Recently, Al Gore lent his support to the company. Hopefully, legislation will change so that these cars can be sold in Canada.

Did you know that electric motors are 80% energy efficient, versus 20% for gas engines? Did you know that the turbine at a coal fired power plant is 60% efficient? With an average transmission loss of only 6.5% and a charging efficiency of 90%, electric vehicles work out to be twice as energy efficient and thus half as polluting as gasoline powered vehicles.

Stupidity, misguided political crapola. Based on price and electricity generation, losses and performance. Heavy lead or expensive "sophisticated" rare metal batteries are NOT the way to go!!! Of course I highly approve Al Gore to drive and travel in only a ZENN car like this for the rest of his life. He deserves the BEST, like the Nobel Prize.

Does any one know the crash test rating for this car. i would love to have a zero emissions car, but im worried about the safety. i wish they had a 4 seat model and a little more trunk room...

You guys must also realise that this tech is advanced enough to go faster than 40km/H it is the government that prevents it from going any faster as the speed for LSV is regulated. It goes 16km faster in some state of which i can not remember where the LSV limit is 10miles/H more so they jsut modified the limiter chip.

They should make electric motorcycles also, I have seen the popular mechanics motorcycle here on youtube too bad its not legal to be driven on the freeway.
