Oh and I drove an '03 Merc C240... reverse was left of 1st but you had to LIFT to disengage the lockout.

Love the German shift pattern... but my '98 A4 2.8 had the "normal" pattern with reverse below 5th (still had to push down). I can't remember when VW changed it.

VW 5 speeds do the same thing, you push down on the stick and over left and up.....Boom

I have a 6 speed 540 as well and have owned some manual 3 series. The reverse being in the top left is actually easier when you have to manuever the car with multiple forwards and reverses. Instead of moving the lever 3 inches to the right, the reverse is just one inch to the left.

@ferncortes1 - idk I have never driven one so yeah I can't judge yet it just SEEMS like it. To late to sticking to automatic, I bought a RSX type-s (6speed) and I'm doing great =).

Hello. I own a 6 speed M sport 540i and there is no way to launch it in reverse. In order to put it in reverse you have to pull the gear lever towards you till you feel a POP then you push it forward locking it into reverse. IF YOU EVER confuse reverse for first gear you probably should not drive a Manual . Stick to Automatic

Very nice, I'm looking to purchase my own 540i soon, I would like 6speed but my issue is with that is I hate how they put "R" by 1st gear, if someone who didn't know tried racing, he'd launch it in reverse, this is why I also wouldn't mind an automatic, plus cruising ain't to bad,
