From the film Morning Sun. The film Morning Sun attempts in the space of a two-hour documentary film to create an inner history of the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution (c.1964-1976). It provides a multi-perspective view of a tumultuous period as seen through the eyes—and reflected in the hearts and minds—of members of the high-school generation that was born around the time of the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949, and that came of age in the 1960s. Others join them in creating in the film's conversation about the period and the psycho-emotional topography of high-Maoist China, as well as the enduring legacy of that period.

  • 3,000 years of culture destroyed in three years.

  • A Neo Liberals wet dream come true.

  • I always liked Mao's idea of destroying the old world to build the new. You guys see them destroying culture. They felt that they were ridding their nation of the remnants of a bygone era, an era built on the exploitation and slavery of the people. I feel for them.

  • The people here saying what the Red Guards did to the Landlords was disgusting have not read enough history of pre-revolutionary China, the peasants were forced to give almost all of their grain to the landlords with little left for themselves - if they failed a harvest they went into debt with interest - during droughts the landlords charged for the use of wells - children were enslaved in sweatshops in the cities literally chained to work benches. They deserved everything they got.
