"It's Only a Paper Moon" was first published in 1933 but artists like Ella Fitzgerald have contributed to its timeless legacy. It was included in the play "A Streetcar Named Desire" by Tennessee Williams.

Say, its only a paper moon
Sailing over a cardboard sea
But it wouldn't be make-believe
If you believed in me

Yes, it's only a canvas sky
Hanging over a muslin tree
But it wouldn't be make-believe
If you believed in me

Without your love
It's a honky-tonk parade
Without your love
It's a melody played in a penny arcade

It's a Barnum and Bailey world
Just as phony as it can be
But it wouldn't be make-believe
If you believed in me

  • My very first memory was my mother singing this to me while watching a black and white cartoon but I never remembered the lyrics just the melody. Then I heard it in a video game called Bioshock 2 and I was happy to get the lryics to find it on here. This is the version that was in the cartoon and I'm overwhelmed to find it. We went through some problems but I know we'll be ok. This song reminds me of how wonderful she is and everything she's done for me. I love you mom and sorry i've been a brat
