My hypothesis is that when Mr. Washington's character said that the current situation was similar to chess that the man was to visualize checkers as a game for simpletons whose moves are not hard to calculate and are easily identifiable. In this sense, one could argue that treating life like checkers is akin to treating your own life as forfeit. You must plan ahead with cunning to stay beyond the devilish thoughts of your opponents. Chess is all about the unexpected and is how you should act.
