The vibrato keeps the sustain going. A good player can trade careful bowing for all that vibrato and get a cleaner, truer tone, but it requires a much better ear than most people have. And yes, better steel makes all the difference; a plain ol' saw from a hardware store is gonna sound like crap no matter how excellent the player is.

He did that because his instrument don't have any sustain...
He should try french musical saw called lame sonore or scie musicale , the result will be totally different for sure.
