Mary Allin Travers (November 9, 1936 September 16, 2009) was an American singer-songwriter and member of the folk group Peter, Paul and Mary, along with Peter Yarrow and Noel "Paul" Stookey. Peter, Paul and Mary was one of the most successful folk-singing groups of the 1960s. Almost unique among the folk musicians who emerged from the Greenwich Village scene in the early 1960s, Travers actually came from the neighborhood.

She was born in Louisville, Kentucky, to Robert Travers and Virginia Coigney, both of whom were journalists and were active organizers for The Newspaper Guild, a trade union. In 1938, the family moved to Greenwich Village in New York City, New York. She attended the Little Red School House in New York City, but left in the eleventh grade to pursue her singing career.

While in high school, she joined The Song Swappers, which sang backup for Pete Seeger when Folkways Records reissued a union song collection, Talking Union, in 1955. The Song Swappers recorded a total of four albums for Folkways in 1955, all with Seeger. Travers had regarded her singing as a hobby and was shy about it, but was encouraged by fellow musicians.

  • Wow -- Mary Travers is the freak'in "mom" mtRNA|DNA to Gisel Bündchen, among the recent decade's mega-top-dollar-paid fashions models ever...whereas, many contemporaneous critics et al narrow thinkers, discounted Mary's "strong looks" as, at best, a cruder version of the "Julie Christie school of peroxide-locks"; whereas, in retrospect--at least for newer generations--review of the ubber-graphical stagings, w/high-key lighting, proves my salient point. Not my type, but a lookers all the same!

  • everytime when i hear this song i could cry , this song is so emotional and i am 14 ! i love this song so much .

  • My (former) wife and I were fortunate enough to have seen her perform live at the Troubadour in West Hollywood, California back in the Spring of 1973 and she was really terrific. Leaving On A Jet Plane was always a bitter-sweet song for me because, in 1969, it was playing at the Oakland Airport as I boarded a plane headed for Vietnam, leaving behind the love of my life (not my wife) who, 2 months after I arrived incountry, would send a letter than began, "Ronnie, I simply cannot wait for you."

  • @twinstu50

My thoughts are w/you and your son and all the rest. Those of us who have served, especially in combat, know there is not "good" war. The VA has changed a lot, at least in my area, there are a lot of resources out there, but the best resource of all is a loving and caring family. My best you and your son,my fellow vets.

  • @rasputin1952

1952 was a good year to be born.

    For me, it was 1950.

Our Son did combat time in Iraq/Sandland.

    He returned a changed man.

Marriage failed, he and his lady finding it hard to be with him, though they have a beautiful baby boy, I'm his Dad, I'm ex-Military, (21 years Air Force)I'm scared shitless for him , his missus and kids.

    Any words?.

  • RIP beautiful woman.

  • R.I.P. Mary.

  • Fantastic!

  • thanks for this beautiful song..

  • This song means so much to me. I left the love of my life to this song...to go off to war...so long ago. I returned a changed man, and could not burden her w/what I had become. I hope and pray to this day, she has a wonderful life filled with nothing but love and warmth.

I miss you Mary, the world is much less since your passing.
