@awesomenessk Haven't read the book and I agree that the album is incoherent, but it also makes it so great! You have everything here! And I mean everything, rich, differential message, many many styles, simplicity versus complexity, hands down! This remains one of my favourite albums ever, it is kitsch versus genius combined. It is so sad that U2 has become so generic in recent albums, being just a shadow of its past glory :p

The main problem with Pop is that there plenty of good ideas but they are badly exploited and often incoherent. And the band doesn't sound very inspired.

I really suggest you read the book "U2 by U2," the band goes into great detail about what went wrong with the album (and there was a whole lot). They have basically the same the view of the album as you. :)
