@omshaantih : One definitely needs to be vegetarian. But Krishna Himself was a cowherd, and He loved milk, so beng vegan is not necessary.
Ofcourse, it is the individual's choice, but consumption of milk/milk products is not against ahimsa. In fact, it is the most, and perhaps the only peaceful way of obtaining animal food without causing much harm. While the scriptures stress the need for the calf to be fed before obtaining milk, our weakness lies in the weakness of that practice.

Do you think one has to be vegetarian to practice?

To practice ahimsa, one needs to be vegetarian. In fact, one should be vegan if the foundation for the "practice" is ahimsa. Lord Krishna tells us in the Gita that we should consume only sattvic food. Each of us can only look into our own hearts and make these decisions, so it is not for me to suggest what you have to do, but for you to decide what you must do!.
