If there is something important that I have taken away from Introduction to Film Studies is passion and that you have to fully believe in something in order to properly capture its essence on film.
I decided to use footage I filmed in Costa Rica because every time I go to visit my family and stay with them weeks and even months at a time it is always a spiritual experience. This semester I was on the phone with my mom I was telling her how my life was falling apart and everyday just got worst and worst, she quickly snapped my out of it and reminded me of all the blessings in my life. Going to Costa Rica for spring break this past March really reminded me that I am very fortunate and all the problems back in Colorado are insignificant college dramas. I really learned to see the bigger picture and I dedicate this video to my mom because she hasnt been back to her home country in 22 years. I wish to share with her the happiness this trip has brought to me and show her that I will never take any of it for granted.
In filming this one-minute video, I also used helpful techniques that helped me create and edit this film. My inspiration was the quote my mother shared with me in Spanish which translates to One day I asked God to give me everything to enjoy life and you know what I realized that He had given me life in order to enjoy everything. In sharing this quote I displayed pictures of my mom, brother and I and then transition to footage from Costa Rice. This footage is significant because it is the neighborhood my mom grew up in. I had the hand camera taped to the car in order to create a tracking device to hold the camera still while shooting. I also decided to cut the diegetic sound and add prerecorded narration, which transitions to non-diegetic music. I chose Fotographies by Juanes because the song invites the photographs, all of which were taken by me, that capture significant moments and things that made my stay in Costa Rica special. I conclude with a clip filmed when I was helping my aunt decorate a traditional family recipe with my moms name on it, which transitions to the reason this film was dedicated to her.
Overall I was very passionate about making this film. I truly believe that it was therapeutic to make a film that helped me piece together important things in my life and have it as reminder of for the next time I get sucked into the dramatic vortex of college life, that there are bigger things out there.
