Its Capt Ron and Todd!!! I went fishing with those guys in June of 08. Caught so many fish that my left arm hurt so bad I couldn't sleep.
It was a lot colder the day we went than it was here. We froze our asses off in late June.

actually you can save those rockfish by taking crate and 60 feet of line and putting them in the water and tossing the crate on them and you let them sink to about 60 feet and he'll swim off.

it was the fish's air bladder

those are yellow eye rockfish. It's a shame to have to take some as bycatch since they're very very slow reproducing and grow very slowly. but they almost always die on the way up from the bottom due to inability to adjust to the pressure change. on the positive side, they're the most delicious fish in the water. very low yield btw. the fish in the video will give you cleaned weight about the same as that coming off a 2.5# walleye.

We caught 3 altogether and you're right- they were delicious. And yes- they don't survive the trip to the surface. I knew they were very long-lived but didn't realize they reproduced and grew so slowly.

My God that is a beautiful place. I love halibut! My dad goes up to Alaska to fish usually in July for his bday. He loves it up there! This year instead they went on an Alaskan cruise. Thanks for sharing.
