THIS FILM IS PUBLIC DOMAIN

A Day Called 'X' was a dramatized CBS documentary showing a civil defence exercise in Portland, Oregon in which the entire city is evacuated in anticipation of a nuclear air raid, after Soviet bombers had been detected by radar stations to the north. It was filmed in September 1957 and aired December 8 of that year. It was presented by Glenn Ford.

Its local rebroadcast in 2004 and appearance in the on-line Prelinger Archives attracted interest among local history buffs due to its extensive outside shots of the city, and the use of non-actor participants (local officials and broadcasters).

On September 27, 1955, Portland actually conducted an exercise evacuation of downtown called "Operation Greenlight," and the film is often misattributed to that year.

  • If you knew enemy bombers were incoming, why wouldn't you scramble fighters to take them out?

  • They would have scrambled fighters / fired Nike AAMs etc etc.

  • (4:19 - 4:40) That is not what those Chrysler Victory air raid sirens sound like. They have a much louder 440hz tone, and were the loudest sirens ever made. Apparently they couldn't record the siren's real sound (it probably would've come out sounding distorted), so they dubbed a police/fire siren over it instead. Look up "chrysler victory siren" here on YouTube to hear what a real one sounds like.

  • Goddam Commies! Scaring helpless cocker spaniels like that!

  • is that the guy from twlight zone?

  • Will the cocker spaniel know how to duck and cover?

  • @steveo7121 At least I have brain cells u don't guess u know nothing of the FACT that in the 1950s Russians could not launch any type of Atomic/Nuclear wpn on US Mainland----see WAR & PEACE IN THE NUCLEAR AGE: Head of Soviet Rocket Forces both the PBS series & text stated they did not have any launch cap to do that to the US---to Europe they did but not on the US! The illegal govt of mainland China is the backer of N Korea; think it is time for this NATION to do some serious nuke-ass-kicking!

  • @rangeclerk - Does your brain cell count reach double figures?

  • @ObssesedNuker Who do u think allowed for materials to be flown over "their airspace" to deliever nuclear material to N Korea---China knows someday N Korea will drop a nuke on someone's city and does not give a shit cause if we even think of striking at that shithole called N Korea China will "protect" those assholes---at that point it will be time to have a nuclear gunfight with both of them and kick their asses off this planet!

  • @ObssesedNuker Lemarckism conflicts BIGTIME with Darwinian Evolution whereas Darwinian Evolution & Mendel work very well together--thank you and again suggest u get the copy of The Rise and Fall of TD Lysenko and many times in the text it describes the attack on any teaching of Darwin by the Soviet State---

  • @ObssesedNuker reaction to the shelling of south korea---nothing from commie china

  • (continuing) identified it as one of the convergences of the 'Laws of Evolution' (in addition to Marxism and pre-Einstein physics) in his treatise 'Materialism and Empiriocriticism', published in 1908. Lemarckism does not conflict with Evolution, it does conflict with Mendelian genetics which the Soviet Union did suppress until the late 1960's.

  • (continuing) to negotiate. There is a division within the Chinese government over whether to completely cut North Korea loose permanently or continue the 'carrot-and-stick'. And yes, if North Korea attacked the South, they would lose badly and be defeated. However, they would cause massive damage to Seoul (which is right by the border) and with it the world economy. And yes, the Soviet Union was a horrible ecological and economic mess. They still, however, did not ban Darwin, Lenin actually

  • @rangeclerk North Korea isn't China's puppet. North Korea has never been ANYONE'S puppet. As a matter of fact, it is a source of continual frustration for the Chinese that North Korea does NOT kow-tow to their instructions. Look China's reaction to the shelling of that island, look at China's reaction to their attack on that ship, look at their reaction to the North Korean nuclear attacks. Every time China condemns them and, several times, cut their aide to the place in order to force the North
